n place, from portable electronics to personal mobility devices, electric vehicles and large energy storage systems. Along with the convenience of this form of energy storage comes the potential for significant fire risk, due to the high energy density and unique combustion properties of Lithium ion batteries. This presentation will overview some of the current issues fire departments see when dealing with battery fires, potential solutions and future trends that may mitigate this problem.
FIREREIN is a clean company founded by firefighters in rural Ontario, Canada, who saw the need to improve the industry with a safe product for both the environment and those fighting fires. What initially started as plans to build firefighting equipment quickly turned into something more when they found out some ‘green’ foams contain PFAS and many toxic chemicals that harm whole communities. Dr. DAVID HYNDMAN has over 30 y
ears of technology development and research management experience. He has lead technology development projects with companies such as Alcan International, Lafarge Canada and Performance Plants. David has managed academic research and training facilities with Queen’s University and supported the Kingston start-up ecosystem through his role with the Industry Partnerships unit of Queen's University. He is currently the Chief Science Officer at FireRein, a cleantech development company that has developed a certified 100% bio-based fire suppression concentrate called Eco-Gel™ designed to control multiple classes of fires, including battery fires.
