ENERGY STORAGE: OPTIONS, PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES

Current transition towards decarbonization of energy production and use relies heavily on rapid development of wind and solar energy systems. Given their inherently intermittent nature, energy storage development becomes essential part of a balanced electricity system. In this review we will address several aspects of energy storage both small scale (household and community level) and large scale (electricity grid level) ones. This review will touch upon storage cost, safety, reliability, sustainability and broader environmental costs associated with the development and operation of these facilities. The main focus of this review are facilities of Canadian interest: the existing ones, planned ones and those that are contemplated for future development.

ROSAMUND HYDE

Rosamund Hyde, Ph.D., P.Eng., has been interested in sustainable energy approaches since grade school. Her family’s home in Tamworth has been the site of solar pool heating, solar domestic hot water heating, solar air heating, photovoltaic generation, solar-charged back-up battery power and electric car charging. She is a Professional Engineer licensed in British Columbia and Ontario, and has served on the SWITCH Board for 5 years. She works in research services with a large consulting firm. In her spare time she likes to watch the plants in her garden storing solar energy as food energy.

DARKO MATOVIC

Darko Matovic, Ph.D., P.Eng., transitioned in his research and academic career from experimental and computational study of combustion of coal and natural gas to looking for more sustainable means of energy production, usage and saving. This journey included delving into biomass pellets, general ways for using biomass for energy, production and use of biochar as a soil amendment and as a carbon sequestration vehicle, energy efficiency and various ways of making energy production and use more sustainable. He is also a member of the Engineers for Social Justice and Peace network where he was mostly focused on socially just ways of plastic waste recycling.
