ALSTOM HYDROGEN TRAIN IN QUEBEC, CANADA

OPEN MEETING RECORDING LINK

April 5, 2024, 8 am

Réseau Charlevoix operated the world's first hydrogen-powered passenger train, Alstom's Coradia iLint, in the Charlevoix area, managed by the Chemin de Fer de Charlevoix. This demonstration project is a showcase for Québec, the first jurisdiction in North America to operate a hydrogen-powered passenger train.

It is the result of a partnership between Alstom, the project's initiator, and manufacturer of the train, Harnois Énergies, supplier of the green hydrogen produced at its site in Quebec City, Réseau Charlevoix, operator of the Charlevoix Train, Chemin de Fer de Charlevoix, owner of the network and Accelera by Cummins, supplier of the fuel cell, as well as the Government of Quebec. financial partner.

Powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which produces electrical energy for all equipment including traction, this direct zero carbon emission train emits only water. Designed specifically for non- or partially electrified lines up to 1,000 km, it entered commercial service for the first time in Germany in 2018 and has covered more than 220,000 kilometers in eight European countries to date. From June to October 2023, the Coradia iLint operated between Québec City and Baie-St-Paul on the private network of the Charlevoix Railway.

This experiment combines economic development and technological innovation while positioning the leadership of the province and the Charlevoix region in terms of transportation decarbonization. Indeed, the industrial partners were able to establish and test the development steps necessary to set up a rail transportation ecosystem based on green hydrogen, while allowing Réseau Charlevoix and Chemin de fer Charlevoix, (belonging to the Le Massif Group), to strengthen the attractiveness of this tourist-oriented region, by offering a sustainable and silent transportation solution to its passengers.

HYDROGEN RESEARCH INSTITUTE, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, offers a comprehensive service in chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science, and engineering related to hydrogen technologies and its safe use. For innovative small and medium-sized businesses, NRC’s IRAP program provides access to consulting services offered by our world-class researchers. Also, HRI is an essential partner for fundamental and precompetitive research projects.

BRUNO G. POLLET Is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, full professor of chemistry, director of the Green Hydrogen Lab and member of the Hydrogen Research Institute (Institut de recherche sur l'hydrogène) at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières in Canada. He has worked on Hydrogen Energy in the UK, Japan, South Africa, Norway, and Canada, and has both industrial and academic experience. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruno_Georges_Pollet
