Sustainable firefighting operations and carbon footprint of forever chemicals.

RMC Green Team

The RMC Green Team was founded in 2005 in order to provide multi-disciplinary support to DND and the CAF with respect to sustainable management of infrastructure and the environment.  Today, the team is co-directed by Dr. E. Maria Skordaki (Water / Environment) and Dr. Nicholas Vlachopoulos (Infrastructure) and includes approximately twenty scholars, researchers and subject matter experts, along with their associated networks. The RMC Green Team continues to make a difference by providing expert advice and conducting studies for the military community and other Federal Government agencies in the realms of environmental risk assessments, energy, sustainability, real property and resource management.

Abstract: Energy-intensive remediation of water and soil is required to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from the environment due to the widespread use of aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) during firefighting operations at civilian and military installations. The toxicity of PFAS coupled with the associated high-carbon emissions can cause significant human health and environmental impacts. Sustainable firefighting alternatives that provide greener, yet effective fire suppression solutions are put to the test with a view to replacing forever chemicals in AFFF with reliable, low-carbon, and low-energy-demand technologies.
