Small Modular Reactors
Tom Lavrisa
Tom is a current member of the SWITCH board and is a retired Regulatory Program Officer for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Tom will be sharing his knowledge on nuclear energy as part of the mix of low GHG options currently available.
Tom Lavrisa graduated electrical engineering in 1977 and focused most of his career on the design of telecommunications equipment. He helped regulate nuclear power plants at Point Lepreau and Pickering with CNSC from 2009 to 2016. Now retired, he enjoys working on his woodlot near Joyceville, where he plans to build his home.
Abstract: A beginner's guide to nuclear power plants: from atoms, thru radiation and generic plants to small modular reactors.
This presentation is timely, given the renewed interest in nuclear energy as part of the electricity mix in Ontario, and in particular the provincial government interest in Small Modular Reactors.
Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect the health, safety, security and the environment. CNSC implements international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy and disseminates objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.
